Remote Working Options

Microsoft 365

The best way to collaborate for most organisations

Microsoft 365 includes many services that are essential for the remote worker including email, online chat, video meetings and file and screen sharing. More information is available on our Microsoft 365 Pages.

Virtual Private Network

A Virtual Private Network (VPN) allows remote computers to access the organisation network securely.

This type of connection allows applications to run on remote computers and access files just as if the computer was directly connected to the office network.

VPNs can be especially useful if workers use laptops in the office which they take home with them when working remotely.

Virtual Desktops

Using a virtual computer

A virtual desktop is a method of accessing an office connected computer using the keyboard, mouse and screen of a remote computer. Any applications running (such as Microsoft Word for example) are running on the computer to which the user has connected.

No files need to leave the company network when using this method which make it a good option if workers are using their own home computers.

The way the virtual desktop is implemented depends on a number of factors. The options are:

  • A worker can access their office computer remotely
  • A virtual desktop is implemented using a server that can support multiple users simultaneously
  • A virtual desktop is implemented in the cloud using a public remote desktop service.
