What does Cyber Essentials cover?

The Cyber Essentials scheme encompasses five ‘control themes’ covering some of the most fundamental aspects of cybersecurity:

  • Firewalls: use a firewall to secure your internet connection

Your organisation’s internal network should be protected against external internet-based threats using a properly configured firewall

  • Secure settings: using secure settings for software and devices

Your devices and software should be configured so that ‘default’ settings and passwords are reset and unneeded software is removed

  • Access control: controlling who has which type of access to data and services

Access to your business data should be controlled with properly assigned user accounts and administrator privileges

  • Anti-malware protection: protecting the business against malware

Anti-malware measures should be taken to protect servers and end-user devices to against malicious software and virus infections

  • Patch Management: keeping your devices and software up to date

Version updates and security patches must be applied correctly and in a timely way to appropriate installed software across all devices.
